Crazy Back Handspring Race

Every time I see someone doing a back handspring, the only think I can think of is how wrong it could go. One little bit of under- or over-rotation and yikes.

But these two guys don’t share my anxiety. This is a race conducted using nothing but back handsprings.

For any of you gymnasts that might be reading: how do you ease into this movement? What are the earliest steps in the progression?

I was in gymnastics used to be able to do back handsprings, but this was a LOOONG time ago. Backward rolls, cartwheels, handstands, round-offs, etc. would probably be good places to start as conditioning and prep work. A foam pit and a coach would be the next steps for me if I wanted to try them again.
