Romanian Deadlift vs Deadlift

I’m not going to try and say too much about the different in the Romanian deadlift vs deadlift done conventional style. Here are a couple of videos. The first is the RDL, coached by Joe Hashey from Synergy Athletics.

And in an extreme instance of the conventional deadlift, here’s Johnnie Jackson pulling 765 x 2.

I first saw Mr. Jackson in the glossy pages of Muscle & Fitness, always billed as the World’s Strongest Bodybuilder. Could be! That’s some serious lifting. I suspect he has never written a Shake Weight review.

The main difference I see between Romanian deadlifts and conventional pulling is the amount of extension in the legs. However, to make things even more interesting, there is also a little lift called the stiff-legged deadlift. There seems to be some confusion about when and RDL stops or starts resembling a stiff-legged pull.

But as far as our discussion and these videos, it’s a matter of how straight the legs are and how much the hamstrings are loaded. I am just now starting to incorporate RDLs into my own training, both with one and two legs. It’s a good movement for me, and is hitting my hamstrings in a way that heavy kettlebell swings have not.
