Frank Zane – Bodybuilder From A Different Time

by Kilo on January 9, 2011

Frank Zane BodybuilderIt amazes me when I look back at how different many professional bodybuilders used to look. Even giants like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno don’t look as massive to me as modern day champion bodybuilders like Jay Cutler.

Frank Zane was a bodybuilder. Here is an video of a posing routine by Zane at the 1980 Mr. Olympia.

He’s not a giant. He looks the way a lot of guys I know say they want to look, but when they happen to go the gym they’re inevitably doing whatever program they read that Ronnie Coleman or Markus Ruhl is doing.

It’s apparent that Frank Zane’s dedication was great, he worked for what he had…and also, he probably couldn’t cut it on today’s physique competition state in the major goals seems to be more. More muscle, more size, more weight, more tan, more chemicals, just more.

I don’t think it’s always better.

Frank Zane was always my dad’s favorite bodybuilder. In the skewed universe of bodybuilding, he appeared almost fragile, but he’d probably be the most muscular person any average person had met. It is unfortunate that size has become the prime motivation, rather than symmetry. The HGH-puffed bellies of the new bodybuilders, as well as their often unwieldy musculature, just doesn’t look that great. There’s a reason that people are still hearkening back to the bodybuilders of the 70′s and 80′s. Maybe they weren’t 300 pound goliaths, but they evinced more of the classic V shape of a toned athlete. With enough dedication, a guy with decent genes might get to look a little like Zane without drugs. Can’t say that for Coleman or Cutler.
