Homemade Dumbbells With A Thick Handle

by Kilo on January 12, 2011

After yesterday’s post about a homemade pull-up bar, I started wondering what else weight lifters are making for themselves. Now, I’m not talking about the bare minimalist, “I only lift rock” type home equipment, but more along the lines of things you might see in a gym.

Enter the video above and these homemade dumbbells. I like it because I don’t think enough people get enough thick handle barbell or dumbbell work in. It is a very, very different feeling and it’s been a long time since I did anything with a normal, 1″ handle.

I will be making myself a pair of 2″ dumbbells soon, I recently made myself a 2″ vbar by drilling into some 2″ steel pipe so that I can bolt it to a 1″ loading pin.

Also the 2″ vbar pipe also serves as a wrist roller with a bit of rope :) Double points!

Another thing I made was a dipping belt with some chain and pipe insulation. I’m all for cheap options, and the chain is rated to take way more weight than a cheapo dipping belt ever will.

Make me some and tunnel under the ocean and bring them to me please. You can sleep in my basement.
