Heavy Tricep Exercises – Reverse Grip Bench

by Kilo on January 12, 2011

I tried this movement for the first time after watching this video yesterday. When I skim through a magazine that promises HARDCORE!!! triceps programs, it’s never very interesting. Skull crushers, kickbacks, close grip bench, etc. But the reverse grip bench was something that I’m not sure I’ve ever seen. Doing a little research shows me that it’s surprising that I’ve never seen it, given that everyone else seems to know about it.

Anyway–this is a heavy tricep exercise that gives a very interesting load on the muscles. Even getting in position was a little tricky since I was at work and didn’t have a power rack. I had to clean the barbell, sit down on the bench, lie back, then go to it.

If you try it like this, keep it gripped tightly while you’re settling in. Even at the piddly weight I was using, it could have gone badly if the barbell had rolled backwards off of my hands. You might not wind up with a world record bench press, but it’s a fun variation that I’ll be rotating in as often as it tests well.

Adam “Grizzly Bear” Glass recommended this one to me a while back, I often test it when regular bench doesn’t test well.

Although I’ve been putting parallel bar dips as my first testing choice for chest and triceps lately, with good results!
