Unusual Dumbbell Exercises

by Kilo on February 1, 2011

It never would have occurred to me to to juggle even 10 lb dumbbells like the guy in this video. Do you see this as being a useful exercise, or just a sort of cool trick?

Boy, you’re asking a loaded question when it’s a guy who throws and catches cinderblocks for fun. I suspect that, if you can keep it up long enough, it might be a decent tool for elevating your cardiac load. I have thrown and caught 30lb ‘bells, and I can tell you that it’s only a game for the first few throws. Explosively hurling even something that is fairly light, then stopping its momentum as gravity brings it down–that’s no joke. All in all, though, it’s probably more of a stunt than an exercise.

I still want a video of you doing that, with a Kylie Minogue song playing in the background.

This is a snazzy trick that doesn’t have much practical use, except for maybe getting a job at the circus. Throwing and catching are useful skills though, especially when we’re talking heavy weights. Being able to transfer and absorb force from an object is always useful – one of the reasons med-balls were invented.
