Sledgehammer Training – 40 Lb Hammer

by Kilo on February 14, 2011

When I do sledgehammer training, it is usually for wrist strength, however, I do a lot of wood chopping, just because I like it and I don’t want to pay anyone to cut down our trees or cut up our firewood. It’s a similar movement pattern to swinging a big sledge and it makes me feel strong and tight in the midsection.

There are plenty of other things you can do with a hammer, whether it weights 8 lbs or 40. The workout the guy above is doing is an exhausting movement which can be a great compliment to things like kettlebell swings, providing the contra-specific load that will keep the tissue balanced.

Of course, keep in mind that it’s going to take a whole lot of hammer swings to get into the 1000 lb club.
