Self Defense Circa 1912- The Cane As A Weapon

by Kilo on March 7, 2011

black and white caneOne of my friends at work who knows my obsession with anything to do with physical culture sent this link to me. The Cane As A Weapon was a pamphlet put out by the Army and Navy registers, and it is really something special.

Whatever else you do, please go look at a couple of pictures in the PDF I link to above. I love it that this was self-defense for the gentleman out and about in his bowler hat, suit, and cane.

And for the record, if there was one era I could go back to purely for fashion, it would be the Capone era when men wore pocketwatches, fedoras, and three piece suits. I look good in a suit.

Update: since this post, people have sent me a lot of different items about old time self defense, cane self defense, defense with a hairpin, etc. Google any of those terms and you will find some fascinating material and some dapper combatants.

K – you should also check out this site:

http://www.bartitsu.org

It has loads of great info on self defence from the early 1900s. The most recent post even has some video footage from 1905.

They have some choice stuff on everyday items being used in self defence, it’s well worth a look.
