World Balance Beam Championships Compilation

balance beam

Balance beam from Robbinssports.com

I don’t know about you, but every time I see someone performing a balance beam routine, my stomach knots up and I wait…and wait…and wait for someone to over- or under-rotate and crack their spine or pelvis or leg or arm or take your pick. But of course, they never do, at least not that I’ve seen.

Mind you, I view simply being able to stand on one foot as a feat of balance prowess. I’m talking to you, one-legged deadlift.

The video below is a compilation of past balance beam championships. I think that one of the things that impresses me the most is that I know that they fall during practice. I’ve no doubt that gymnastics gyms see some of the most gut-wrenching mishaps in sports.

But they keep getting back on the parallel bars, or the pommel horse, or refining their tumbling, or geting back up on this tiny, narrow beam that is barely as wide as the ball of my foot.

Impressive, terrifying for weenies like me, and very strong.

K.
